The town of Vieste is the main centre of the Gargano

Vieste

It is particularly famous for its beautiful waters thanks to which the city received the “bandiera blu” many times. The old town centre is really charming: it is characterized by typical white houses and narrow alleys leading to little squares.

Vieste

The upper part of the town stands on the part of the promontory known as Punta San Francesco, marked by a fortified monastery and the Norman-Swabian castle. The castle stands on a cliff falling sheer to the sea and dominates the whole town.

Scogliera Vieste

It appears magnificent and compact with a triangular plan and pointed angular bastions completing the defensive system. It is worth mentioning the Cattedrale dell’Assunta that dates to the 11th century; it shows the typical plan of most Apulian Romanesque churches even if it has been modified many times during the centuries.

Spiaggia Vieste

Very famous is the so called “Pizzomunno” which is an about 25 metres high monolith standing at the end of the beach of the castle: the legend says that it is a boy changed into stone after having committed suicide for love.

Spiaggia Vieste

Going along the street which links Vieste to Mattinata, it is possible to admire a breathtaking scenery: a very rich coast characterized by white cliffs and erosive phenomena.

Scogliera Vieste

It is worth mentioning Cala San Felice, the bays of Campi, the small islands of Pugnochiuso and Vignotica and the countless sea caves which can be reached from Vieste by motorboats.

Secular olive-groves

Symbol of the flora of the whole region is the olive tree, which characterizes the territory from the Tavoliere to the end of the Salento with immense fields.

Secular olive-groves

The olive trees with their beauty and charm, given by their secular crooked trunks, embody the history of Apulia thanks to their millenarian presence on the territory. They are the oldest and largest group of millenarian vegetal specimens in the world.

Self- vegetation and animal species in Apulia.

Horse of the Murgia

A huge number of biotopes of vegetable and animal species characterizes the region, even if only the 7% of the territory has been declared protected area. The Apulian self-vegetation is marked by woods, the Mediterranean maquis and the so-called ganga (rocky pasture).
