Selva di Fasano, a beautiful holiday resort

At 400 metres above the sea-level, on the pre-murgia, halfway between the valle dei trulli and the sandy beaches of the coast road, the Selva di Fasano has represented a well-known holiday resort since the end of the 19th century.

During the summer, the territory offers coolness to many tourists, thanks to the presence of a partly intact woody vegetation with oak trees, pines and cypresses. The area is also embellished by elegant villas, some of which with very ancient origins.

The most representative is the Minareto, built in 1918 by the painter Damaso Bianchi, from Fasano, which perfectly mirrors the typical Moresque architecture: it has been donated by the family to the Regione Puglia to house conventions and art exhibitions. It is worth visiting the parish church called Trullo del Signore, because of the presence of typical cone-shaped domes which remind of the famous trulli, and the Casina Municipale.

In the 1960s the Casina was an important tourist attraction thanks to the numerous events here realized, with the most famous national and international singers and actors. In the neighbourhood it is possible to visit the Safari Zoo, which is one of the largest zoological parks in Italy and offers the possibility of admiring free animals, in wide spaces, through particular ways to be covered by car.

A huge number of biotopes of vegetable and animal species characterizes the region, even if only the 7% of the territory has been declared protected area. The Apulian self-vegetation is marked by woods, the Mediterranean maquis and the so-called ganga (rocky pasture).
